MOMMArmSTRONG does bargain books

One of the greatest costs each school year is purchasing new books for my class, whether for a novel study or my personal class library. Over the years I have found some great ways to get books for cheap or FREE!
One of my personal favorite places to purchase books is through Scholastic Reading Club. I check frequently to see what specials and bonuses they are featuring when you purchase books. Below are the specials they are featuring this month and into September.
Using the "Spend Now" cash I was able to get 20 of these books for only $10!
It was so simple too! Each book was listed at $1 each in the catalog for this month. I purchased 10 at the price of $1. I had several other books for my order which helped me hit the $10 "Spend Now". I used the $10 to purchase an additional 10 copies of this book.
Scholastic features several books for a $1 in each flyer. This is usually the best and most cost efficient way to purchase class novel sets.
If you are an 8-12 grade teacher, aynrand.org offers free novels for your classroom. They also offer an array of essay contests with great prizes for students. Here are the three novels you can select from depending on the grade level.
There are no gimmicks, free shipping , and they will supply you with new books each year as you request them. So don't be afraid to mark them up with annotations.
My other favorite place to shop and get books for my classroom are Thrift Stores. A lot of times you can find brand new or barley used books for less than a quarter. Don't be afraid to check out local yard sales or children's consignment sales.
Each year the library system in my state hosts a huge book sale called " Friends of the Library" for discarded books. Ask you librarian if your library system does something similar. You can find great books and audio books.
Also, my Media Specialist at my school recycles books by allowing teachers to pick from the discarded books to keep in our personal libraries. Check with your Media Specialist and ask if they can hold any discarded books for you to sort through.
Lastly, don't be afraid to ask your students to donate books from their personal collections. If  a student chooses to donate a book I always encourage them to leave a little note for their peers on the inside cover. This helps create a sense of community and makes the book special.

What are some ways that you collect books for your classroom?
